About Us

FRESH home made Cream Teas available! Our home, which has been in the Sewell family since the early 1960's is over a hundred years old and situated on the outskirts of Manston, a peaceful and relaxing rural village. Manston (Not to be confused with the other Manstons in Kent and Yorkshire) is situated in the heart of the beautiful "Blackmore vale" of North Dorset and surrounded by farmland. The nearest town is the old market town of Sturminster Newton which is about 2 miles away. Another market town of Shaftesbury with it's famous cobbled street of "Gold Hill" is about 6 miles away.

Dorset is renowned for it's natural rural beauty, and is considered to be the third most popular holiday destination in England. This is an aerial photo (800×565 pixels, 116KB). With so many country walks, houses, gardens, other places of interest and attractions to choose from you can stay several months without seeing the same attraction twice! As Manston is about 25 miles from the coast it is ideal for not only a day at the beach — without staying in the crowded costal area — but places like Bath are an easy drive for a day's outing. We do packed lunches so you can enjoy a picnic in the countryside on the way.

The charming house was build about 1900 and was originally one of the farm worker's cottages. It is said it was built at a cost of £100 which seems incredible in today's money! With extensive modifications over the years which have been done in keeping with the original house we now offer a comfortable home away from home for your holiday. No expense has been spared to make our guests as comfortable as possible with the most modern and extensive amenities and attention to detail. We hope that the usual comments of "It's nice to be back home" after your holiday will be replaced with the comment "Wish we could have stayed longer at Northwood Cottages!" You will find the beds some of the most comfortable you have ever slept in as they are the top of the range Sealy "Natural Elegance" beds.

Flower, Northwood CottagesThe local pub "The plough" which is a free house (not tied to any brewery so they can stock all brands of ale, including many local ales etc.) is a few minutes walk away. So no need to go by car and have to watch what you drink! They also produce excellent meals and have a garden at the back.
